How we go about it
This is the smallest work and at the same time the work that costs most when it is left alone. A toilet that keeps running gets through hundreds of litres a day, and in the Netherlands you pay for water by the cubic metre, so it simply appears on the annual bill.
We replace taps, cistern internals, float valves, traps, shower hoses, waste plugs and toilet seats, and we reseat a basin or a toilet that has worked loose. That is usually done in one visit.
Tell us the make and model of the tap, or send a photo of it, and the right cartridge comes along straight away. In older Uithoorn bathrooms that is the difference between one visit and two.

What to do until we arrive
Close the isolating valve under the basin or behind the toilet and the dripping stops for now. Put a container under a leaking trap. Photograph the tap from the side, which is the angle that makes the model recognisable.
What we carry as standard
Float valves, flush valve seals, O-rings, traps, shower hoses and tap cartridges in the common sizes. A complete new tap, or a concealed cistern from an older brand, may need a part to be ordered.
Small job, short invoice
For work finished inside the first hour we charge the call-out plus that one hour, and after that per quarter of an hour. A dripping tap should not cost half a day.

The call-out charge applies once per visit. The lower hourly rate covers taps and sanitary ware, the higher one high pressure drain clearing and boiler work. The surcharge applies before 08:00, after 18:00 and on Sundays and is a fixed amount, not a percentage. After the first hour time is counted per quarter of an hour, and parts are listed separately.
If it takes longer than estimated. At the door you hear what appears to be needed and roughly what that costs. If it turns out to be more work, you hear that the moment it becomes clear and not afterwards on the invoice. Above € 400 nothing goes ahead without your agreement.

What it usually comes down to in Uithoorn
A dripping tap is nearly always a worn ceramic disc or a failed O-ring, a fifteen minute repair. A mixer that lets hot and cold run into each other needs a new cartridge. A tap that bangs or shudders when you close it is suffering water hammer, a pressure shock in the pipe, and that is solved with a damper or by clipping the pipe differently.
Toilets have two classics. The float valve stops closing, so the cistern overflows into the pan; or the flush valve seal lets water past. Both are fixed with standard parts, including on concealed cisterns (in Dutch inbouwreservoir) from Geberit or Wisa, as long as the flush plate can be taken off.
A drain that smells is usually a trap that has run dry or sits out of level, not a problem with the sewer. It happens often in a guest toilet that is rarely used: the water in the trap evaporates and then the sewer connects straight to the room.

Is it worth calling a plumber out for one tap?
Do the sum: a toilet that keeps running costs more in water over a year than the visit does. For a single dripping tap it is often sensible to add a second small job, a trap or a shower hose, because then you pay the call-out charge once.
I have already bought a new tap. Will you fit it?
Yes. Make sure the tap and its flexible tails are complete. If the new tap does not fit the existing connection, you hear that before anything is taken apart.
Can a concealed cistern be repaired without opening the wall?
Nearly always. The flush plate gives access to the float and the valve, and those are the two parts that fail. Only a leak in the cistern body itself means more has to come out, and that is rare.
My toilet smells but drains fine. Is that a blockage?
Probably not. With a drain that runs freely, a smell is usually a trap that has run dry. A bucket of water fixes it for a while; if it keeps returning, another appliance is siphoning the trap empty and the pipework needs venting.
