What kind of place Amstelhoek is
Amstelhoek is on the far side of the Amstel, in the municipality of De Ronde Venen and therefore in the province of Utrecht. We reach it over the Prinses Irenebrug, the bridge that links the village to Uithoorn and is at the same time the provincial boundary. The village is small, around a thousand residents, and the former N201 cuts it in two.
The oldest building is a ribbon along the Amstel: south of that road the hamlet of the Mennonietenbuurt, filled in further during the 1970s. The northern part, around the Engellaan and the Piet Heinlaan, is largely pre-1960 and laid out on a grid. Along the Amstelkade many gardens run down to the water.
The village stands on what the Dutch call bovenland: peat that was never dug away, lying at the level of the surrounding waterways, while the reclaimed polders to the east lie much lower. The consequence is what matters for plumbing: high groundwater, wet crawl spaces, and drains that lose their fall as the ground settles. In pre-1960 houses the classic problems of old pipework come on top of that: galvanised steel, lead connections, and waste pipes of vitrified clay (gres) with open joints that roots grow into.

My drain blocks in the same place every time. What is going on?
In the older housing here it is usually a clay pipe that has lost its fall as the peat settled, or an open joint that roots have grown into. Clearing it then helps only temporarily.
